Freight modes · Full truckload (FTL)

Full truckload rates that match the market, on loads that leave full

Full truckload is usually the cheapest way to move a lot of product per case, and one of the easiest places to overpay. Full truckload rates drift from the market, spot loads get booked at whatever the market charges that day, and trailers leave with open floor space.

We review 12 months of your FTL invoices, show you where your full truckload rates and fees are out of line, then contact your carriers and negotiate better terms on your behalf. Dry van and reefer.

Who it’s for

Built for US CPG food and beverage brands that ship full or near-full trailers to retail DCs, distributors, co-packers and their own warehouses, with $1M+ in annual freight spend.

  • Dry van shippersSnacks, packaged foods, beverages, wine, beer and spirits moving on pallets to DCs and distributors.
  • Reefer shippersChilled and frozen product, plus loads that need heat or freeze protection only in some seasons. We don’t haul reefer freight; we find savings in what you pay for it.
  • Retail and distributor deliveriesTight appointment windows, multi-stop routes and the fines that follow when loads arrive late or short.
  • Contract and spot mixLanes priced on annual contracts, mini-bids or the spot market, and usually some of each.

Where full truckload costs leak

  • Rates that drifted from the marketContract rates set in a different market, and spot loads booked at the price of the day with nothing to compare them to.
  • Paying for empty spaceA trailer that leaves half full costs nearly as much as a full one. Light snacks run out of space first; beverages and wine hit the weight limit first. The U.S. EPA’s SmartWay program makes the same point: partially loaded trucks increase overall fuel use and shipping costs (source: EPA SmartWay).
  • Detention, layover and TONU (truck ordered, not used)Waiting time at shipper and receiver docks, layovers and fees when a truck is ordered but the load isn't ready, billed on top of the line-haul rate.
  • Fuel surcharge tablesA fuel schedule with a low base or a steep scale costs more every week, and few shippers revisit it after signing.
  • Reefer where dry would doPaying reefer rates on lanes or in seasons where the product doesn’t need temperature control.
  • Lanes carriers don’t wantUnbalanced lanes, awkward pickup times and slow docks get priced higher, because the carrier is covering the empty miles home.

How we lower your full truckload costs

Full truckload savings usually come from three places at once: the rate, how full each trailer is and the fees around the load. These are the levers from our 10 that matter most for FTL.

Industry guidance

What SmartWay recommends for truckload shippers

According to the U.S. EPA, SmartWay is a voluntary public-private program, launched in 2004, that “helps companies identify and select more efficient freight carriers, service providers, transport modes, equipment, and operational strategies to improve supply chain sustainability and lower costs from goods movement” (source: EPA SmartWay). Here is what its shipper guidance says about truckload freight, and what it means for your freight bill.

  • Ship full loadsSmartWay’s shipper strategies fact sheet notes that partially loaded trucks increase overall fuel use and shipping costs, and suggests better truckload scheduling to make sure loads go out full (source: EPA SmartWay). On a per-load rate, every open pallet position raises your cost per case.
  • Plan loads, don’t guessAccording to SmartWay’s load optimization fact sheet, load planning and optimization can cut shipping and fuel costs by 5 to 15 percent, and co-loading with other companies can cut costs and fuel use by 20 percent or more (source: EPA SmartWay).
  • Cut idling and detention at your docksEPA estimates an idling diesel engine burns about 0.8 gallons of fuel an hour, and notes that fuel burned at idle can affect the carrier’s fuel surcharge. By lowering carriers’ costs through no-idling rules and preferred dock treatment, it says shippers “might be able to negotiate lower shipping rates” (source: EPA SmartWay).
  • Favor efficient carriers and equipmentSmartWay ranks carriers in five performance ranges for each freight mode and carrier category, so shippers can compare prospective and current carriers (source: EPA SmartWay). EPA also says SmartWay tractors and trailers used together can save about 15 to 20 percent on fuel over standard models (source: EPA SmartWay). Fuel is built into what you pay through the fuel surcharge, so carrier efficiency is worth weighing alongside the rate.

When to switch modes

The right answer is rarely one mode for everything. We choose lane by lane and order by order, based on cost per case, delivery requirements and how the product needs to travel.

Loads regularly leave with lots of open floor spaceShared truckload, or consolidating orders into fewer, fuller loads

FAQ

Full truckload FAQ

More answers on our FAQ page

How are full truckload rates set?

Usually per load or per mile on a lane, plus a fuel surcharge and any accessorial fees. Contract rates come from bids or negotiations and hold for a set term. Spot rates move with the daily market. We compare both with current market rates for your lanes.

Do you book or haul our truckloads?

No. Maximizer Team is an independent freight advisor, not a broker or a carrier. We don’t haul or book freight, and we don’t take carrier commissions. We do contact your carriers and negotiate contracts on your behalf, and your contracts stay in your name.

Can you lower reefer truckload costs?

Yes. We look at reefer rates by lane and season, fuel and accessorial terms, and loads that could move dry without putting product at risk. We find savings on both reefer and dry van freight.

When should a load move as shared truckload instead of FTL?

When it fills only part of a trailer and you still want it to stay on one truck from pickup to delivery. Paying for a full truckload on a half-full trailer is one of the most common gaps we find.
