LTL freight costs, without the surprise charges

LTL lets you ship a few pallets without paying for a whole trailer. But your LTL freight costs depend on more than the quote: freight class, density, reweighs, reclasses and a long list of accessorial fees can push the bill up after the freight has moved.

We review 12 months of your LTL invoices, find the charges that shouldn’t be there, then contact your carriers and negotiate better discounts and terms on your behalf. Dry van and reefer.

Who it’s for

Built for US CPG food and beverage brands with $1M+ in annual freight spend that ship a few pallets at a time to distributors, retailers, co-packers and specialty stores.

  • Dry LTL shippersPackaged foods, snacks, beverages, wine and spirits in mixed or full pallets.
  • Reefer LTL shippersChilled and frozen product moving in temperature-controlled LTL, where carrier choice is narrower and rates run higher.
  • Distributor and retail ordersMid-size and small orders with delivery appointments, liftgates or limited-access sites.
  • Teams without time to auditFinance and logistics teams paying LTL invoices without checking class, weight and fees on every line.

Where LTL freight costs leak

  • Wrong freight classLTL class is now driven largely by density. Since NMFC Docket 2025-1 took effect on July 19, 2025, many more items are classified by density (source: NMFTA, July 2025). Outdated class or wrong dimensions on your bills of lading cost you on every shipment.
  • Reweighs and reclassesWhen a carrier’s inspection finds a different weight or class than your paperwork, the invoice changes after the fact, often with an inspection fee on top.
  • Accessorial feesLiftgate, residential, limited access, appointment, inside delivery, redelivery and storage fees add up, and some are billed when the service wasn’t needed or wasn’t performed.
  • Discounts and minimumsA discount off the carrier’s base tariff, an FAK (freight all kinds) class and the minimum charge all decide the real price. Old terms often no longer fit your freight.
  • Too many small shipmentsSeveral LTL shipments going to the same region in the same week can cost more than one consolidated or multi-stop load. According to the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay program, co-loading with other companies can cut costs and fuel use by 20 percent or more (source: EPA SmartWay).
  • Handling and damageLTL freight changes trucks at terminals. More touches mean more risk of damage and shortage claims, and more retailer deductions.

How we lower your LTL costs

LTL savings come from getting the paperwork right, pricing it right and moving the freight that has outgrown LTL into something better. These are the levers from our 10 that matter most for LTL.

What SmartWay recommends for LTL shippers

According to the U.S. EPA, SmartWay is a voluntary public-private program, launched in 2004, that “helps companies identify and select more efficient freight carriers, service providers, transport modes, equipment, and operational strategies to improve supply chain sustainability and lower costs from goods movement” (source: EPA SmartWay). Here is what its shipper guidance says about less-than-truckload freight, and what it means for your freight bill.

  • Know your real weights and dimensionsSmartWay’s route and network fact sheet suggests keeping records of the actual weight, dimensions and volume of everything you ship, packaging included, and comparing the payload on carrier invoices with your own product weights (source: EPA SmartWay). In LTL, that same data is your defense against reweigh and reclass charges.
  • Build denser palletsSmartWay’s load optimization fact sheet recommends reviewing pallet design and dunnage to make the most of the space in each trailer (source: EPA SmartWay). Denser pallets also matter for class, now that density drives class for many more items (NMFTA).
  • Ship fewer, larger ordersThe same fact sheet describes a food producer that raised its required lead time and minimum order size so containers shipped full (source: EPA SmartWay). Batching orders is one of the simplest ways to cut the number of LTL shipments you pay for.
  • Compare LTL carriers like for likeSmartWay’s carrier data ranks LTL/dry van carriers only against other LTL/dry van carriers, for an “apples to apples” comparison (source: EPA SmartWay), with rankings in five performance ranges per category (source: EPA SmartWay).

When to switch modes

The right answer is rarely one mode for everything. We choose lane by lane and order by order, based on cost per case, delivery requirements and how the product needs to travel.

FAQ

LTL FAQ

More answers on our FAQ page

Why did my LTL invoice come in higher than the quote?

Most often because of a reweigh or reclass, or accessorial fees added after delivery. We check those charges against your bills of lading and your carrier agreement, and dispute the ones that don’t hold up.

How does freight density affect LTL class?

Density is the weight of a handling unit divided by its cubic feet. Under the NMFC changes that took effect in July 2025, density is now the main factor for many more items. Accurate dimensions and weights, and denser pallets, help keep class and cost down.

Can you lower LTL costs for refrigerated freight?

Yes. Reefer LTL has fewer carrier options, so pricing and consolidation matter even more. We review your reefer LTL rates and look at where shipments could be combined or moved to another mode.

Will you switch our LTL carriers?

Not unless it helps you. We start by negotiating with your current carriers on your behalf. If another carrier or mode fits better on some lanes, we show you the numbers and you decide.

What do you need to review our LTL spend?

12 months of freight invoices, plus your LTL agreements and rate files if you have them. We sign an NDA where needed, and you get a free written review in 14 days.
